Meet the team Cameron Brichart on Besox HC Izegem's Surprise Season

Besox HC Izegem surprised everyone with a 9th-place finish last season and are now chasing the play-offs

Ahead of the new season, we spoke with Cameron Brichart of Besox Handbalclub Izegem about last season’s surprise run, a fresh mix of players, and no longer being the newcomers.

How would you describe the atmosphere within the team?

“Hungry. We’ve welcomed several players from the French league who will make their Coinmerce SHL debut with us. Everyone feels driven to prove to the crowd, and to the rest of the league, what we can do. We’re also collectively counting down to our first home match againstAalsmeer on 5 September.”

What do you think is the team’s greatest strength this season?

“The new mix of players creates a fresh dynamic. As a player you’re constantly challenged in training (in a good way), which forces you to grow. I expect this group to show up sharp for every single match. On top of that, we simply have a fantastic crowd. Friend and foe agreethat playing here is a special experience.”

What’s changed within the team this year?

“A lot has changed, but our mentality has stayed the same. We remain a team that wants to make the difference through relentless effort during the match. Last season we picked up some great results, including draws against Bevo and Volendam, by fighting until the final minute. This season too, our opponents can expect that they won’t be done with us until the final whistle.”

What are the team’s goals for this season?

“Last season we were one of the surprises of the competition. Our goal back then was survival, but that was quickly adjusted during the season to 9th place, which is also where we eventually finished. As a club, we want to become a fixture within the Coinmerce SHL. As a team, I think we’re all determined to make the play-offs.”

What’s your team’s favourite pre-match ritual?

“Last season our match preparation came with a solid dose of techno in the locker room. I’m curious whether that tradition will hold, or make way for something new. Although I suspect we’ll end up somewhere with a Belgian compromise.”

What would you personally like to achieve this season?

“This season I want to keep playing a decisive role within the team, and show in every match that we’re no longer the newcomers, but a team everyone has to reckon with.”
